Guy trapped in avalanche with helmet cam filming it, rescued (video)

As a skier this scares the hell out of me. A guy is skiing with friends in Verbier, Switzerland when out of nowhere he gets covered up in an avalanche and buried beneath six feet of snow. This happened in 2011.

He says he managed to hold his hands in front of his face to create a pocket of air that he was able to breathe through. His friends saw it happen, and were able to get to him in only 5 minutes.

He ended up being fine, didn’t need to be helicoptered out. But man, this video scares me.

The guy skied on a wind-loaded ridge and hit rocks barely covered and fell. I could tell by how hesitant he was while he was skiing that he was not a great skier. Had he been more experienced he would would have A) not hit rocks and fallen and B) seen the danger of skiing on a wind loaded cusp of a ridge and avoided it. The dude needs to take an avalanche coarse.

I can see how that could happen and, yes, it’s scary. When I lived in snow country, I enjoyed Nordic skiing but I never “hit” the slopes. Here in Florida, there’s not much danger from snow but youthful locals enjoy surfing with sharks. What could go wrong?

A friend of mine, an expert telemark skier, died by getting inverted in a tree well. Those are equally scary to me as avalanches.
