Tony Orlando & Dawn: Knock three times (video)

On this frozen weekend in North America, I couldn’t think of a better way to start the day than Tony Orlando and Dawn singing “Knock Three Times.”

All I can say about the seventies is, as far as fashion statements go, thank all $DEITIES that the decade ended. I was recently watching videos of popular music in Germany from current past decade since year 2000, and was not the least surprised to find many of the female singers for Schlager style traditional German songs doing videos that could, fashion wise, have been filmed in the 70’s here in the USA. What was really stunning was some of the popular German TV variety shows stage settings. I think Lawrence Welk is alive and still working in the Heart of Europe designing sets and costumes and music for German television.

  2. OOH! John, your timing is excellent. I bought the record (Bell label) when this song was at the top for the five weeks of January 1971. I still play it, and cannot hear the castanets. I have it in front of George Harrison’s “My Sweet Lord” and the Presidents’ “5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30 Years of Love and Bobby Bloom’s “Montego Bay”, and behind Lynn Anderson’s “Rose Garden” , Barbra Streisand’s “Stoney End” and the Grass Roots’ “Temptation Eyes”.
Ah, the memories. I have my 1300+ singles in reverse chronological order, so I can go back to whichever year I want. (I did the same on my college radio show in 1981-82.) In June 1971, I played “Knock Three Times” on my clarinet for my Eighth Grade Graduation, totally unaware that it’s a song about a “peeping Tom’ or voyeur. But then, I did not know that the singer needed a cold shower in “Temptation Eyes”! I miss being naïve and innocent. I didn’t even care what Nixon was doing at the time!
